The thing about Greenland is, it’s not very green. Well it might be, but it’s hard to tell under all that snow. Beauty of the white stuff. The first Nuuk Snow Festival was held in 1994, and it still annually brings together snow sculptors from across the world.
During the four day event, (held in March when the average temp is around -15AC), the competing teams are given a compressed block of snow to do with what they will and the, often striking and inspired, results are displayed in a sculpture park – in Nuuk’s main sports field – and illuminated at night. What began as a local enterprise, now attracts teams from the US, Canada and Europe, and it adds a welcome dash of colour and magic to Greenland’s otherwise rather anonymous capital.
