ICELAND NATIONAL DAY

Iceland won their independence on June 17, 1944. National Day celebrates their complete independence from Denmark. It is also the birthday of Jon Sigurdsson. Jon Sigurdsson was a soldier who helped fight for Iceland’s independence. They celebrate National Day by having a procession in the capital city of Reykjavik on June 17th. The procession has lots of people playing drums and dressed up as soldiers to represent fighting for their independence.

Iceland is the second largest island in Europe. It is located south of the Arctic Circle; it is between the North Atlantic Ocean and the Greenland Sea. The capital of Iceland is Reykjavik. The population is 288,201(1 st Dec…2002). The language spoken on Iceland is Icelandic. It is believed to have changed very little from the original language spoken by the Norse settlers. Icelandic is the oldest language spoken in Europe. Iceland is a country where there is a lot of snow.

Iceland is a beautiful country and in beautiful countries there are beautiful things.
