Cuba become an atheist nation in 1962 when Fidel Castro assumed power. In 1969, Castro dropped Christmas from the calendar because he thought it was interfering iwth teh sugar harvest. Castro restored the holiday in 1996 to honor Pope John Paul II when he visited the island.
